City of Ansonia (Est. 1893) Civic wall painting

City of Ansonia 1893, Civic Mural, 2020

Project Profile

Location: Ansonia, Connecticut
Design Objective: We were invited to transform this alleyway location on Main Street into a feature wall for the property owner. We decided to design a civic mural that has historically responsive design elemens that celebrate the city’s history of being a prominent clock company at the turn of the previous century. We researched Ansonia Clock company catalogues and chose a design that was made for print in 1886. We added a scroll that reads New Haven County and Naugatuck River to give the mural a geographic location. The background color is painted with metallic copper paint that points to the city’s history too being known as the “Copper City” The hand drawings fonts and flourishes were made in black and white for clear legibility. The wall is facing City Hall and is adjacent to a public park and has become a iconic destination for the downtown area.
